Breast Self-Examination: How to Check for Early Signs

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. While regular screening tests such as mammograms are essential, becoming familiar with your own breasts can help you notice changes early. Breast Self-Examination (BSE) is a simple technique that allows women to monitor their breast health and identify potential warning signs that may require medical attention.

Why Is Breast Self-Examination Important?
Breast self-examination helps women become familiar with the normal appearance and feel of their breasts. This makes it easier to detect any unusual changes. Although BSE does not replace regular medical screenings, it can be an important part of overall breast health awareness.
Early detection of breast cancer often leads to more treatment options and better outcomes.

When Should You Perform a Breast Self-Examination?
Women should perform a breast self-examination once a month.
If you menstruate, examine your breasts a few days after your period ends, when they are least tender.
If you have reached menopause, choose a specific day each month and perform the examination regularly.

How to Perform a Breast Self-Examination
Step 1: Look in the Mirror
Stand in front of a mirror with your shoulders straight and arms at your sides.
Look for:
➜ Changes in breast size or shape
➜ Swelling
➜ Skin dimpling or puckering
➜ Redness or rash
➜ Nipple inversion (turning inward)
➜ Nipple discharge
Next, raise your arms above your head and look for the same changes.

Step 2: Check While Standing or Showering
Using the pads of your three middle fingers, gently examine each breast in a circular motion.
Follow a pattern:
➜ Circular pattern around the breast
➜ Up-and-down pattern
➜ Wedge pattern from the nipple outward
Cover the entire breast area, from the collarbone to the upper abdomen and from the armpit to the cleavage.
Feel for:
➜ Lumps or thickened areas
➜ Unusual hardness
➜ Changes in tissue texture

Step 3: Check While Lying Down
Lie flat on your back and place a pillow under your shoulder.
Using the opposite hand, examine the breast with small circular movements. Apply light, medium, and firm pressure to feel different depths of tissue.
Repeat the examination on the other side.

Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore
Consult a specialist if you notice:
➜ A new breast lump
➜ Changes in breast size or shape
➜ Persistent breast pain
Skin dimpling or thickening
➜ Nipple discharge, especially if bloody
➜ Nipple inversion
➜ Swelling or lumps in the underarm area
➜ Redness or changes in skin appearance

Remember: Not Every Lump Is Cancer
Many breast lumps are caused by benign (non-cancerous) conditions such as cysts or hormonal changes. However, any new or unusual finding should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

When Should You See a Doctor?
Schedule an appointment if:
➜ A lump persists after your menstrual cycle
➜ You notice any new breast changes
➜ Symptoms worsen or do not resolve
➜ You have a strong family history of breast cancer
Early evaluation can provide reassurance and, if necessary, lead to prompt treatment.

Breast self-examination is a simple habit that takes only a few minutes each month but can help women become more aware of their breast health. Knowing what is normal for your body and recognizing changes early can make a significant difference.

If you notice any unusual symptoms or have concerns about your breast health, consult a qualified specialist like Dr. Jayachandra Reddy Metta for proper evaluation and guidance.
